Transnistria

Transnistria is a narrow strip of land located between the Dniester River and the Ukrainian border, internationally recognized as part of Moldova. It declared independence in 1990 as the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic, but this sovereignty is not recognized by the United Nations or most countries. The region has its own government, military, and currency, and it operates as a de facto independent state. Transnistria’s population is ethnically diverse, including Moldovans, Russians, and Ukrainians. The area has experienced political and social tensions, particularly due to its breakaway status following the dissolution of the Soviet Union. The presence of Russian troops and the unresolved nature of its political status continue to influence its stability and relations with both Moldova and neighboring countries.
